Skills and EducationDerby boasts a multi-skilled and flexible workforce, which is able to adapt to the diverse sectors in the local economy. Investment in training is a key element in supporting lifelong learning and skills development in the workplace. This helps to retain skills in the city and enable employers to positively respond to ever changing work and production practices. The University of Derby is firmly grounded in its community. It has a focus on applied, vocational courses in which it has a long track-record (40 years of working with the NHS, 25 years with accountancy bodies like ACCA, as well as being a Centre of Excellence for professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply). As a result, the University consistently scores well on employability and on value added. The appeal is wide: school leavers interested in full-time degree courses or further education; more mature students seeking access to higher education; those who wish to upgrade their job skills whilst in work, having a career break or to fit in with their other commitments; and employers looking for programmes designed to meet their very specific needs. The University has around 25,000 students (one third part-time, 1 in 5 over thirty) studying at all levels and ages from 16 into active retirement, many are based on campus in Derby or Buxton but many choose to study online, in the workplace or at centres in the region or overseas. Derby has one of the most flexible, modular schemes of learning in the UK, where subject areas can be mixed and matched to suit individual and employer needs. The University has the largest number of Learning Through Work students of any UK university. In the immediate area Derby College has three sites of further education. Other colleges of Further Education are available, promoting managerial and professional expertise. A new 6th form college, The Joseph Wright Sixth Form Centre, has now been opened, accommodating up to 1500 students. Within a 50-mile radius of Derby there are 10 Universities and numerous higher education establishments, which cover any subject/course you may require. The iD Centre is a European and Government funded collaborative project with Derby City Partnerships, EMDA (East Midlands Development Agency) and The University of Derby. The purpose of the iD Centre is to provide an environment to stimulate entrepreneurship, which will promote and develop stronger new businesses, generate new ideas and technology and create high quality jobs. iD Centre is conveniently located with easy access to the city centre and the railway station.
