Quality of Life - Education
The vision for the Education Service is that “Learning brings success. Excellent learning and leisure opportunities throughout life will bring better life choices and chances. The development and success of children, young people and adults in the city is our shared, key focus.”
Derby’s education system has the variety and capacity to provide for the needs of children, young people and adults moving to the city. Derby maintains eight nursery, 25 infant, 20 junior, 36 primary, 13 secondary and five special schools. In addition, there is a city technology college and a range of independent schools. Two nursery, seven primary phase and four secondary schools have enhanced resource provision for pupils with statements of special educational need, but all schools provide for additional and special needs under the authority’s inclusion policies. There is nursery provision for all three and four year-olds whose parents want one across a range of local authority, private and voluntary provision. Most of the secondary schools are specialist schools, and the Council is working to achieve specialist status for them all. Eight of the secondary schools and the CTC provide post-16 education, and there is also a wide range of opportunities at Derby College. Most of Derby’s schools are community schools, but there are also eight foundation schools, 12 voluntary aided and one voluntary controlled school. All of the maintained schools in Derby are comprehensive. The schools serve defined catchment areas, and there are sufficient places for all pupils to transfer from primary education to their local secondary school. Lifelong Learning & Community

The service is currently developing nine new multi-agency children’s centres across the city. Youth ServiceYouth Service contributes to the personal development of young people aged 12 – 25 years. It works with young people in youth clubs, schools, on the streets and in specialist settings such as the Space, which is an information and advice centre for young people. The Youth Service also runs a number of projects for disadvantaged groups as well as running the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The Youth Service also makes a significant contribution to Connexions-Derbyshire, the comprehensive advice and guidance service for 13-19 year-olds, which has been very successfully established in the city and county. Adult Learning ServiceAdult Learning Service secures adult learning opportunities for around 8,000 learners each year, including qualification and non-qualification courses.
