Current projects

These are a selection of citywide projects currently been undertaken in Derby, which have an impact on inward investment opportunities and the Derby infrastructure.

Derby Cityscape Ltd

Derby Cityscape Ltd, The Urban Regeneration Company for Derby City Centre was established in April 2003 by the Government in response to the city’s social and economic relative underperformance within the region. Recognising the need for significant and co-ordinated change to address this, local and regional partners, from the public and private sectors have joined forces in forming the company to deliver comprehensive change. The Cityscape partnership enables a coordinated approach to achieving the physical, economic and social regeneration of the city centre, ensuring that the city centre is able to fully meet the needs and aspirations of the local communities and stakeholders.

Derby Cityscape’s focus is on a comprehensive programme for joint working between public, private and community members to deliver regeneration.

Connecting Derby

Connecting Derby is an integrated transport project that seeks to put in place high quality improvements in the city centre through a combination of traffic management measures so that core retail streets become more attractive and people friendly. Footways have been widened, and new spaces created. The addition of new lighting and street furniture has helped to create a street scape worthy of Derby and its city centre. The project also completes the Inner Ring Road around the central areas, and this enables traffic to be removed from primarily residential areas, and puts in place efficient bus priorities, pedestrian and cycle improvements. The new Inner Ring Road also creates a more logical and direct route for car traffic and servicing vehicles. The project removes many development uncertainties and is the key transport element of Derby Cityscape.

Friar Gate Studios

Derby City Council is leading on the development of a dedicated business centre for fledgeling creative businesses, Friar Gate Studios.

The centre, which will be a key building in the Derby Cityscape plans, will house 40 businesses such as graphic design, music production, film-making and computer game companies as well as high spec. meeting rooms which are free to the tenants but also available for external bookings and a café bar.

The centre, which will be fully operational by end of November 2006, has been designed to provide the space, layout, broadband communications and location necessary for small creative businesses that have outgrown places like the University’s Network House or Banks’s Mill studios. It is hoped that regional agencies like EM Media (part of the UK Film Council), the Designer Forum (for East Midlands fashion designers) and Arts Council England, East Midlands will have a presence there. There has been a lot of interest in the building and viewings with the Centre Manager, Ann Bhatti, have commenced.

Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership and East Midlands Development Agency have put £1.135 million towards the centre, Derby City Partnership has allocated a European Regional Development Fund Objective 2 grant of £959,000 and the Council has contributed the land on which it is being built plus £525,000.
