Derby is home to global brands from the service sector such as 'egg', the internet banking arm of the Prudential and the largest on-line bank in the world.

Engines are fitted to more than 50 aircraft types and customers include 300 airlines representing 30% of the global market share. The company has an order book worth more than £10bn.

Working on a car production lineThere is a huge range of large companies and small businesses in Derby. There are many large employers who offer flexible working and great career development opportunities. There are also many smaller, established, businesses, including several in the growing 'creative' sector. Cyber heroine 'Lara Croft' was designed and invented here by a relatively small software design company, 'Core Design'.

Other famous companies who continue to prosper in Derby include Thorntons chocolate factory and distribution centre, employing over 1,500 people and S&A Foods, which was started on a kitchen table by entrepreneur Perween Warsi. It has become one of the biggest UK producers of ethnic ready meals supplying major supermarket chains.

Toyota logoThe Japanese giant, Toyota Motor Manufacturing is increasing production from its current 200,000 cars a year (80% of which go for export) and increasing its skill base to employ over 4,000 people. Companies benefiting from the increased investment in the railways include Adtranz, and Bombardier who is producing new trains for the London underground and employing over 1,800 people.

Nottingham East Midlands Airport logoOne of the largest private sector employers in the Derby area is the East Midlands Airport. Short and long haul passenger flights and budget airlines all operate from here and this airport is now the largest pure freight airport in the UK.

The airport is continuing to grow rapidly and supports an estimated 9,100 full-time equivalent jobs both on and off site. It is anticipated that by 2030 the airport will be handling 15.3 million passengers and 2.6 million tonnes of freight. This will require a total of 23,100 full time equivalent jobs by 2015, and 35,900 by 2030 covering a broad range of skills and employment opportunities.

Derby is also fortunate in having a massive £250 million development of a new city hospital to provide the latest healthcare in a modern, energy efficient environment. The South Derbyshire NHS Trust currently employs 6,000 people with a further recruitment of over 1,000 Future developments in Derbypeople over the next five years.

In 2007 retail selling space in Derby will have increased by approximately 40% with a major expansion of the current shopping centre to include the latest in quality retail. This development alone will require an additional 2,850 full time equivalent and permanent jobs across the spectrum of the sophisticated retail service employment opportunities.
