Quality of Life - Derby's Community
Arts and the Creative mind
"Derby is renowned for involving a diverse mix of the many different community arts organisations in a range of vibrant festival activities, events and exhibitions across the city. The inspiring cultural activity is stimulating and reinforcing the emerging creative industries quarter in the north west part of the city where a convergence of cool restaurants and creative business activity has set the scene for a notable social and cultural interaction.
Q Arts is one of the region’s leading contemporary visual arts organisations showing innovative new work at Q Gallery and offering a wide range of opportunities for everyone to participate. There are opportunities for local people to get involved in these and other creative activities with numerous local arts, poetry, drama, music and dance groups and there is a flourishing band and club culture in and around the city. Voluntary associations and charities
"Derby has a vibrant voluntary sector with an estimated 1000 local voluntary and community groups - nearly 100 are from the black and culturally diverse sector. There are lots of chances for people to get involved in community benefit.
Traditionally the south-east has been seen as the heart of the charitable sector with many national charities based in London. Increasingly this is ceasing to be the case, as many national charities are relocating to the regions for the same reasons that large companies and government departments are considering decentralisation. Many voluntary sector initiatives are piloted in Derby and rolled out to the rest of the country. Our Community Network and Community Legal Service Partnership are just two examples.
New employers arriving in Derby have all contributed to the development of voluntary sector activity in recent years, not only through direct sponsorship but through employee participation schemes which help integrate them and their staff into the local scene. These have included Toyota, Egg, Bombardier and the Pensions Service, as well as existing employers such as Rolls-Royce."

Diversity of faiths in Derby
"Derby is a city with a rich spectrum of Christian denominations and traditions. The Cathedral of All Saints is a beautiful 18th century building with a tall medieval bell- tower and a fine musical tradition and St. Mary's Catholic Church is one of the best examples of Pugin's work in the country. There is also a strong Free-Church presence in most parts of the city with all churches working well together in service to the community.
There are also large Islamic, Sikh and Hindu communities and groups of most other world-faiths. In the new Multi-faith Centre at the University and the Forum of Faiths there is a vision of Derby as a world City - a place of welcome and a home for all, whatever their creed. "
